What is These Lyrics Do Not Exist?

First released in 2018, These Lyrics Do Not Exist was one of the earliest AI lyric tools. As the name suggests, the site enables users to generate lyrics that haven’t been written before.

Using These Lyrics Do Not Exist

Upon entering the site, you’ll be met with an intuitive and simple interface, where you can customise the topic, genre, and mood of the lyrics you want.

These Lyrics Do Not Exist Main

After choosing the kind of lyrics you want, the site instantly creates lyrics with a standard song structure – verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse 2, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, chorus. Here are some of the lyrics I got from the site:

These Lyrics Do Not Exist Outputs
Left Prompt: car, rock, sad. Right Prompt: book, country, happy. Repeating parts – Chorus and Pre-chorus – have been cut out so you only see it once..

Below the generated lyrics, there are options to "download", "regenerate lyrics", or "start again" (with a new topic).

What are its Benefits?

Ease-of-use and instant generation: The site is easy to use. I got used to the interface in no time and it takes less than 5 seconds to choose your customisation options.

Customise topic, mood, and genre: Having the power to customise what lyrics you get is a huge plus. The interface enables you to write in your own topic and choose from 6 genres and 5 moods. One aspect that was interesting was that you can use emojis as topics for your song.

What are its Limitations?

Too Simple for Serious Musicians: The drawback of a simple and easy-to-use generator is that it doesn’t allow more advanced musicians to play around with ideas. Once the lyrics are generated, you can’t regenerate parts of it – only the whole song.

Bad with Phrases and Lists: When inputting phrases or multiple words for the topic, it seems like the generator doesn’t understand what you want. For example, I generated lyrics for “the end of the world”, pop, and very sad and what I got is completely unrelated to the topic (see the lyrics below on the left).

These Lyrics Do Not Exist Bad Lyrics
Left Prompt: end of the world, pop, very sad. Right Prompt: grass, EDM, very sad.

Incoherent Lyrics: Similarly, I generated lyrics for “grass”, “EDM”, “very sad” and it didn’t make sense (see the lyrics above on the right).Apparently “grassing” is a common activity among New Mexicans???

Usually, Makes It About Love: About 90% of the lyrics I generated ended up being about love from the male perspective. It’d be nice if there was an option to edit the tone of the writing.
